2 million kids die from epidemic disease

April 28, 2009

No pigs involved, I’m afraid.

Bacterial pneumonia kills 2 million children under the age of 5 every year.

That’s 228 per hour. If reading this takes you one minute, thats almost 4 more deaths.

There are various preventative measures – from exclusive breast-feeding to improved nutrition – that can be implemented, vaccines exist for two of the biggest strains of the disease, and cases of bacterial pneumonia can be treated with a simple oral antibiotic costing less than 70p. However, a child still dies unnecessarily from the disease every 15 seconds, because existing measures are not adequately implemented.

Oh, and over 1 million people die from Malaria every year.

3.1 million people die from AIDS every year.

Around 1.5 million people die from Tuberculosis every year.
