AU Steps Up Role In Mogadishu

July 14, 2009

As Al Jazeera reports, the past few days have seen an important development in Somalia. African Union troops have openly begun to intervene on the side of the Somali “government” which is propped up by the U.S. and other donor nations. The AU has, without doubt, been intervening unofficially (and has been flagged as  a major human rights abuser by Amnesty International because of this) for years in Somalia, but this marks a shift towards an all out counter-insurgency.

The Somali government is locked in a battle for the capital against a diverse insurgency, which is broadly constituted of islamist fighters, nationalist elements and clans excluded from the central government.

Witnesses and Somali government officials said AU forces helped government troops battle rebel fighters as they advanced into northern Mogadishu on Sunday.

Sunday’s fighting left at least 11 people dead, residents and officials said.
