Solar Powered Bibles for Haiti?

January 19, 2010

This is bizarre, if oddly predictable. Along with a small army of marines (and now 3,500 more UN peacekeepers), the U.S. is providing a truly essential part of the Haitian relief effort. Yep, as AFP reports, “A US-based Christian group is joining the Haiti earthquake relief effort by sending hundreds of solar-powered audio bibles to the shattered Caribbean nation.”

Faith Comes By Hearing is on the spot, replete with 600 “proclaimers” telling quake victims to hold tight and pray, in creole. Why the local pastors who are receiving these devices would need them to spread the word of god is unclear, as is why solar powered water purifiers or medical equipment is less urgent, but 3,000 more are on the nonetheless.

Ironically, considering the lack of food supplies in Haiti, the supremely useless “proclaimer” was invented “during three days of fasting and prayer by the entire staff of Faith Comes By Hearing.”

Unsurprisingly, Faith Comes By Hearing have worked out a marketing strategy directed at the U.S. military, some of whom might be headed to Haiti with their patented “Military BibleStick” which “is bringing comfort and hope to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines.”
